Unfortunately, I don’t think many of the bottles he’s acquiring will survive the voyage for me to sample upon his return 😂

DAVIESS COUNTY BOURBON

The sun was definitely shining when I got this package through in the mail.

Daviess County bourbon distilling company’s history is long and strong. Dating back to 1874, was one of the first distilleries in Kentucky.

Like so many great distilleries, they disappeared but luxrowdistillers have now just recently revived this brand.

This straight bourbon is a combinations of two mashbills. A wheated and a rye. Bottled at 96 Proof.

This bottle is one of three in the range which also includes a Cabernet Sauvignon and French Oak finish.

A huge, huge thank you to the superstar bourbon_cask for sending me these bottles which also includes a sample of the French Oak. It is greatly appreciated.

If you are not following bourbon_cask you should. This guy is spreading the Lux Row love throughout Europe and doing an incredible job of highlighting their amazing portfolio.

It’s so good to see more and more new American Whiskey reaching these shores which we are seriously lacking in. Will get this bottle opened very soon and share my thoughts on it.

Have you tried any of this range?

Happy #whiskeywednesday

Lux Row Distillers did a nice job with this French oak finish. Pleasant notes of sweet oak laced with honey and cinnamon. Solid pour here 🥃

Where you been lately, there’s a new kid in town

An interesting approach, as this entry from Lux Row’s Daviess County label not only finishes a 6 month long second barrel stay in French Oak, it also is a blend of 2 different mash bills — one rye, one wheated. Credit to Lux Row for being upfront that it’s sourced juice, with my money on this being Heaven Hill distillate. Lux Row’s own juice is currently aging, so this is something of a time-limited expression. Also, denizens of Owensboro will be perhaps mildly offended to learn this whiskey comes from Bardstown, not O-boro.

Nose - bright and very, very floral with some pear in the background; this is straight up Glenmorangie with a side riff of Bushmills 10 Year — it’s not bourbon-like at all but it’s also pleasant, just not what I would have guessed

Palate - you know the dueling banjos scene in Deliverance? This is that but with rye notes and wheated notes cast in the role of string-pickers. For lack of a better descriptor, this is a *fun* bourbon. Grass, honey, and sugar trade pole position back and forth with oak, cinnamon, and a touch of pear.

Finish - long and funky, and I mean funky like Niles Rogers funky. The oak and cinnamon of the palate slowly give way first to scotch-like malt notes followed by, I swear to you, agave. It starts bourbon, goes Highland scotch, and ends like a good, aged mezcal. Again, this bottle is a world traveler.

Summary - this is a bottle with a few tricks up its sleeve; if Four Roses Single Barrel is the bank heist scene from Heat — aggressive, stoic, uncompromising — then this is Ocean’s Eleven. It’s breezy, fun, easy to plow through and misdirecting in a great way. The scotch and mezcal notes were very unexpected, but also very entertaining. Much like the double barrel finish on Woodford Double Oaked imparts new dimensions, same thing here. It’s a far cry from what I’d call a traditional bourbon, but if you’re adventurous or in the mood for something different, the Magical Mystery Tour awaits.

In the Library working on boxing up samples and bottles so I decided to pop a cork. This pop is from Daviess County - Kentucky Straight Bourbon - French Oak Finish. Coming in at 48% ABV / 96 Proof. The nose is inviting with hints of honey, vanilla and slight caramel. The palate is nice with almost a molasses or chocolate taste. Plenty of oak going on as well. The finish is warm med-long with a touch of spice. Not a bad pre-dinner dram if you want my opinion 😁 Follow all the Bourbon_thieves:
